How to find out what is the right CCTV system for your company

Selecting adequate security cameras and CCTV systems for your business is an important decision for companies of all sizes and sectors.

With the range of equipment available, and the varying advantages CCTV cameras may bring to a company, making the correct choice is truly important.

Below are some considerations to think about before purchasing a new CCTV system for your company.

Do the security system and cameras go indoors or outdoors?

Most cameras are suitable for inside and outside, but it’s important to take into account certain features such as housing and mounting. If the camera will be used in a cold environment, selecting a camera that is durable and incorporates a heater means it will remain operational despite the cold temperature.

In the transport industry, for instance, it is wise to pick a robust solution. This guarantees it will operate reliably in harsh environments and even where there will be a high level of vibration.

But not only external cameras need consideration. Within factory environments, for instance, you could need to protect cameras from heat or dust.

Are your cameras going to be discreet or will they be a visual deterrent?

The location where it will be located and what you need to monitor with your CCTV will determine whether you need obvious or discreet cameras. Large-sized cameras will act as an obvious reminder to people that they actually are being monitored, decreasing the chance of theft. Smaller cameras are the best choice for discretion.

What is the size of the area you want to monitor?

The ideal type of camera will really depend on the size of the area you will be covering.

PTZ cameras work much better for large areas. They are usually powerful cameras with the capability to view a large area and even zoom in on particular activity. Using PTZ cameras will also reduce the number of cameras required when covering large areas, reducing costs whilst still getting high-quality images.

Smaller areas are going to require simple static cameras.

    Is audio integration required?

Integrating audio into your CCTV system makes it possible for security or authorities to hear and even speak with possible perpetrators.

It can be used as an independent detection system triggering recordings when audio passes a certain threshold.

How clear should be the video quality?

The area you want covered will determine the resolution you require. For instance, if you need to monitor possible shoplifting, installing a high-quality image for identification purposes in case of prosecution is essential.

Alternatively, cameras with a lower resolution will be relevant for smaller areas such as shops or offices.

Will the lighting affect the recording of the CCTV?

The cameras should be effectively placed according to lighting conditions, particularly with external cameras. Varying amounts of sunlight during the darker months can affect the effective placement of the cameras.
